What does it mean?
Aggregate is granular material used in products such as concrete and mortar or as a separate layer in construction. Particle size, grading and material properties affect suitability. A concrete volume does not directly tell you how many tonnes of aggregate to buy without a specified mix and conversion basis. Loose volume, compacted volume and mass are different quantities.
In practice
One cubic metre of finished concrete cannot be treated as one cubic metre of loose aggregate plus a guessed amount of cement. Use the mix specification or a supplier’s verified batching quantities for procurement.
Keep in mind
When preparing an estimate, record the specification reference, units and source of each assumption. Separate the net measured quantity from purchase allowances so changes remain easy to trace. Confirm product dimensions, yields and installation requirements with the supplier. Quantities do not establish structural adequacy or material suitability: use the project’s approved design and details, and seek the responsible designer’s clarification where the specification is incomplete.
